Recently, I’ve been craving intelligent conversations. Thought-provoking, insightful conversations.
Last weekend, I tried to have one with my daughter (who is 11, so probably not quite ready for those types of conversations) about why I really liked the Tron: Legacy soundtrack. She just kept asking me what my favorite part of the movie was or who was my favorite character. >.>
Today at work, I discussed the Pledge of Allegiance with my cousin and why it should be said in schools. We were both on the same basic side of the issue, just had differences in the why’s and how’s it should be said.
And then tonight, I had a conversation with my boyfriend about the proposed changes to Mark Twain’s stories and removal of words that “might” offend people.
I began to wonder where this craving is coming from. And that, of course, led to some more deep thinking.
I joke around with some of the people I work with about how reality TV is killing brain cells, and speaking text shorthand is lazy. I’m beginning to wonder if that’s where this craving started. I don’t claim to be a deep intellectual, or have really big thoughts, but I guess I’ve grown up and am ready for grown-up conversations.
I only watch four shows on TV anymore, and I watch them for the enjoyment factor definitely! But, they aren’t full of what people call “reality.” And they’re not dumbed down. I think that’s why I like watching those shows and can’t stand any of what’s fairly standard on TV now.
Sometimes, I worry about what effect this will have on our children. Will they grow up to crave intelligent conversations or will they be one of the millions following some superstar’s Twitter feed to find out if s/he has a zit on their ass…?

If you’ve made it through this post and you want to have a conversation with me, I welcome it. I especially don’t care if you agree or disagree with me as long it’s a sensible and well thought out conversation, I welcome it.
I am right there with you needing intelligent conversations! It certainly seems like people are getting more lazy and dumb. I can attest to that in my own house. I would also like to add that as we progress people are forgetting their social behaviors for virtual ones. (I may be getting old, but when the kids don't know how to interact with people face to face, somthing is wrong). By the way, I love the artwork!
ReplyDeleteLuckily for us, Jade doesn't have too much non-face to face interactions with people. She's still young enough that we can control that to a degree. She is really smart, and, on occasion, we do get good conversations out of her, but she's also flighty and easily distracted by -everything-.
ReplyDeleteAnd you are so not old. Because that would mean I am too, and I'm not old. :p More artwork to come!
When I think back about all the things I've done in life, it's the conversations that stand out. I don't remember vacations or concerts or holidays so much as I remember the things I talked about with people who really, truly had something to say.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to be part of the intelligent conversations you're talking about!
Great website, Jai! I knew you were talented, but this really impresses me! I really liked seeing you, Jon, and James discussing the pledge of allegiance. So many "kids" your age (maybe a bit younger) never say anything deeper than "So I like told him....and he like went like this and then I like said.....yada yada. Makes my head spin. I would like to see more intelligent conversation come out of this blog. Warms this ol mother's heart.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I have a logo design project to tell you about. Not sure what the prize is, but if you want to try, its designing a logo for our community band. I will give you details later. I know its something you could easily do. And what a deal, if I can tell the band members MY KID MADE THIS! Luv ya.
